in Anderson's Constitutions and Dermott's Ahiman Rezon, in
Preston and Mackey, in Knoop and Jones on the mediaeval mason, in Claudy
for the newly made Mason, in Pike for the Scottish Rite, and in papers read
before lodges of research over three centuries. The difficulty has never
been that the answers do not exist. It is that they sit in works few of us
have to hand.
FreemasonryGPT reads that library and answers in plain terms, naming the
work and the page behind every claim. An answer here is meant to be
somewhere to begin rather than somewhere to stop: follow the citation,
find the book, and go further than the answer went.
The library closes in the 1930s for most subjects, so where a question
reaches beyond it — how a jurisdiction stands today, what a museum
holds, what has been found since — Grand Lodge sites, lodges of
research, museums and archives are searched as well.
What matters is that you are told which is which. Every answer separates
what was read from a book, naming the work and the page; what was
retrieved from a website while the answer was being written, with the
link; and what the model asserts from its own knowledge, having read
neither. The last is marked plainly, because a confident sentence with
nothing behind it is the one thing a reader cannot detect for
themselves. Nothing here asks to be taken on trust.
Nor is a single writer allowed to stand for the Craft. Where the
authorities differ — and on the origins of a symbol or a degree
they very often do — the answer says so, attributes each
position, and where the sources show it, says what the difference
turns on. An interpretation is given as one man's reading, not as
the reading.
A question opens a thread, and a follow-up is answered in the light of
what came before. Five exchanges is as far as one thread runs, which is
usually enough to pursue a point properly. Threads are kept and published,
so the archive grows question by question.
History, symbolism, jurisprudence and ritual scholarship are all in scope.
Where a question concerns a particular Order, the answer comes from that
Order's own literature. It will not set out the signs, tokens, words or
the particulars of any ceremony — those are received in the lodge,
from one brother to another — but their history and their meaning it
will discuss freely and gladly.
The answers are written by AI and can be wrong. Each names its sources so
that you need not take it on trust.
This site takes for its emblem the point within a circle, bounded by two
parallel lines. It teaches a Mason to keep himself within due bounds, and
the lines are what make those bounds knowable — which seemed right
for a tool that will not claim more than its sources bear, and that shows
you where the lines fall.
