Yes, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was indeed a Freemason. He was initiated into Freemasonry on 14th December 1784 in Lodge ‘Zur Wohltätigkeit’ (Beneficence) in Vienna. He was passed on 7th January 1785 and raised shortly thereafter. Throughout his career, Mozart wrote many pieces of music for Masonic ceremonies and was known for promoting Masonic ideals through his compositions. His family also had a history with Freemasonry, as his grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather were all respected Operative Masons. Mozart was part of one of the first generations of ‘speculative’ Masons, who did not earn their living as stonemasons.
