Ancient landmarks represent those foundational principles, universal customs, and essential laws that define the identity and fundamental structure of Freemasonry 1. The phrase "landmarks of our Order" first appeared in George Payne's Regulations of 1721, which were incorporated into the 1723 Book of Constitutions 1. At the installation of a Worshipful Master, it is solemnly asserted that no person or body has the authority to make innovations in the Body of Freemasonry 1.

Scholars and Grand Lodges have long debated the exact composition and number of the landmarks, as no single list is universally accepted across all jurisdictions 1. Albert C. Mackey formulated a widely cited list of twenty-five landmarks, which included the right of visitation, the requirement to examine unknown visiting brethren, lodge jurisdiction and non-interference, the belief in God as the Grand Architect of the Universe, and the belief in a future life 1. Mackey also identified candidate qualifications as landmarks, specifying that an initiate must be a man, unmutilated, freeborn, and of mature age 1. Historic Masonic theory similarly treats the requirement that a candidate be freeborn as a landmark governing eligibility for initiation.

Other scholars proposed different frameworks. W. J. Chetwode Crawley condensed the landmarks into a triple foundation comprising the fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of man, and the life to come 1. Dean Roscoe Pound defined them as universal, unalterable, and unrepealable fundamentals existing from time immemorial 1. Albert Pike maintained that the landmarks were simply the essential principles regulating fellowship set forth in the Ancient Charges, observing that agreement on a definitive list had never been reached 1.

Masonic governing bodies have consistently used the concept to anchor their legitimacy. Early Masonic Grand Committees passed resolutions directing practices to be conducted so that the ancient landmarks would be preserved and handed down pure to posterity, while the Antients Grand Lodge under Laurence Dermott explicitly positioned its administration as keeping these ancient landmarks in view. At the official constitution of the Grand Lodge of India in 1961, the Deputy Grand Master of Ireland empowered the new body to exercise the full rights of a Grand Lodge according to the ancient usages and landmarks of the Craft.
