Immovable jewels consist of the Tracing Board peculiar to each degree, the Rough Ashlar, and the Perfect Ashlar 1. In early eighteenth-century ritual catechisms and older English workings, the immovable jewels were instead listed as the Trasel Board (or Tracing Board), the Rough Ashlar, and the Broached Thurnel 1, a point also noted by the Square Magazine. Masonic scholars have long debated the exact nature of the Broached Thurnel, interpreting it variously as an untouched quarry stone, a working chisel, a double square, or a turreted stone structure 1.

The Square Magazine notes that in certain jurisdictions outside that of the United Grand Lodge of England, the categorization of movable and immovable jewels is reversed, placing the officers' jewels among the immovable group and the stones and tracing board among the movable.
