What are the requirements for joining Freemasonry?

Freemasonry welcomes men of good character who meet specific criteria. The fundamental requirements include:

  • Being of lawful age (typically 18 or 21, depending on the jurisdiction).
  • Being a free man, meaning not being a slave or bound by undue obligation.
  • Believing in a Supreme Being.

Additionally, candidates must possess good moral character and reputation. The decision to join is personal, and prospective members are encouraged to express their interest to Masons they know. Ultimately, the decision to admit a candidate rests with the members of the Lodge, following a process that includes investigation and a ballot.

As noted in Introduction to Freemasonry – Entered Apprentice by Carl H. Claudy, "A candidate who has just received the symbolic degree will require more than two years to complete those of the Scottish Rite unless under a special dispensation" .
