What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry, also known as Masonry or 'The Lodge', is a powerful and ancient fraternal order that began in the early eighteenth century. Most Masonic authorities trace modern Masonry, often referred to as 'speculative' Masonry, to the founding of the first Grand Lodge in London in 1717. It is classified as the largest secret society in the world, utilizing symbolism, secret oaths, and rituals to instruct new members, known as 'Initiates'. Each member swears loyalty to the Lodge and its teachings, which aim to harmonize the beliefs of all men based on Masonic principles.

Two foundational beliefs of Masonry are the universal fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, asserting that all individuals, regardless of their religious backgrounds, are spiritual sons of God. Additionally, Masonry emphasizes the importance of personal character reform and good works as a means to earn divine favor and secure a place in the 'Celestial Lodge Above' (heaven).

Freemasonry is often defined as a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. It is not a religion, but it requires a belief in a Supreme Being and encourages members to practice good moral conduct in their daily lives. The organization promotes brotherly love, relief, and truth, fostering a sense of equality among its members, who are encouraged to support one another and engage in charitable activities.

Despite its secretive elements, Freemasonry is not a secret society in the traditional sense; it is a society with secrets, where the teachings and ideals are meant to be widely known and practiced.
