What is the history of Freemasons Hall in Chennai?
The history of Freemasons Hall in Chennai is rich and reflects the broader narrative of Freemasonry in the region. Freemasonry first arrived in Madras (now Chennai) in 1752, with the establishment of Lodge No. 222, warranted by the premier Grand Lodge of England. The Lodge of Perfect Unanimity, consecrated on October 7, 1786, is the oldest Lodge in the District of Madras and played a significant role in charitable activities, including the establishment of the Male and Female Orphans’ Asylums in 1808-1809.
Over the years, the Lodge of Perfect Unanimity met at various locations, facing challenges due to frequent relocations. The construction of the Freemasons Hall took place in 1923 (or 1925 according to some sources) in the Egmore area, with the foundation stone laid by Lord Willingdon, the Governor of Madras. The hall is notable for its architectural significance, featuring a Greek pattern with four giant pillars and interiors adorned with Italian tiles and marbles.
Today, Freemasons Hall serves as the headquarters of the District Grand Lodge of Madras, remaining a well-maintained landmark that continues to host Masonic meetings and events, while also attracting tourists.
