What is the Lodge of Antiquity?
The Lodge of Antiquity, originally known as the Lodge of St. Paul, is recognized as one of the oldest lodges in Freemasonry, having played a significant role in the early development of the Masonic fraternity. It was established before the formation of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717 and has maintained its authority and traditions independently of the Grand Lodge. The lodge has been described as having an 'immemorial constitution' that its members regard as sacred, allowing them to operate under their ancient customs and practices without the need for a warrant from any Grand Lodge.
Historically, the Lodge of Antiquity has been involved in notable disputes with the Grand Lodge, particularly regarding its rights and privileges. For instance, during a conflict in the late 18th century, the lodge asserted its independence and refused to comply with certain edicts from the Grand Lodge, which led to a schism that lasted for a decade. However, it eventually restored harmony and resumed its place within the Masonic community.
As of 1795, the Lodge of Antiquity was still active and flourishing, meeting regularly and preserving valuable records and relics of its long history.
