What is the Mother Lodge No 0? Why is it called so?
The Mother Lodge No. 0, also known as the Mother Lodge of Scotland, is a significant and ancient lodge within the Grand Lodge of Scotland, located in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland. Its history dates back to the 12th century, around the time when Kilwinning Abbey was established in 1140.
This lodge is referred to as the 'Mother Lodge' because it is considered the original lodge from which many other lodges have descended. The term 'Mother Lodge' signifies the lodge where an individual was first 'made a Mason' (i.e., received their Entered Apprentice degree). It holds the unique designation of being 'Number 0' on the roll of the Grand Lodge, which reflects its seniority and historical importance in the development of Freemasonry in Scotland.
Historically, before the formation of the Grand Lodge of Scotland in 1736, Mother Kilwinning operated as a Grand Lodge in its own right, issuing warrants and charters to other lodges. This autonomy and its role in the early organization of Freemasonry contribute to its revered status today.
