What is the opinion about Baphomet in Freemasonry?
Freemasonry does not hold any official or recognized opinion about Baphomet. The figure of Baphomet is not part of Masonic teachings, rituals, or symbolism. The association of Baphomet with Freemasonry is largely a misconception that arose from accusations made during the suppression of the Knights Templar in the early 14th century, which were later popularized by anti-Masonic writers.
As noted by Albert Pike in his work Morals and Dogma, it is absurd to suppose that men of intellect adored a monstrous idol called Baphomet or recognized Mahomet as an inspired prophet. He emphasized that the symbolism associated with Baphomet was invented long before and was misunderstood by those who were not adept in the esoteric traditions of the time .
