Who were the Levites?
The Levites were a tribe of Israel, specifically descendants of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. They held a special status among the tribes of Israel, as they were set apart for religious duties and responsibilities. According to the texts, the Levites did not participate in the sin of the golden calf and were thus chosen by God to serve in the Temple, performing various roles including singing, guarding the Temple, and assisting the priests in their duties. They were responsible for the musical aspects of worship and played a crucial role in the rituals and sacrifices conducted in the Temple.
As stated in the Zohar, "the Levites are attached (Heb. nilvim) and joined as one above" and they are responsible for singing the praises of the Holy King, which is essential for the spiritual service in the Temple.
