Why is the Kilwinning Lodge called No 0?
The Kilwinning Lodge, often referred to as 'Mother Kilwinning', is designated as No 0 due to its historical significance and its role in the formation of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Although it was not the first lodge to be numbered, it was recognized for its antiquity and influence. After the establishment of the Grand Lodge of Scotland in 1736, Kilwinning was granted the unique status of being numbered '0' when it rejoined the Grand Lodge in 1807. This designation reflects its status as a foundational lodge that had previously issued warrants and maintained a degree of independence from the Grand Lodge.
As noted by VW Bro. Trevor W. McKeown, 'Mother Kilwinning finally rejoined the Grand Lodge of Scotland again in 1807, taking precedence on the roll and numbered ‘0’.' This highlights the lodge's historical importance and its recognition as a pivotal institution in Scottish Freemasonry.
