why are craft lodges dedicated to the saints john
Traditional lectures trace the custom of dedicating lodges to the two Saints John back to the early Christian era. In Masonic tradition, lodges were originally dedicated to King Solomon as the first Most Excellent Grand Master. Following the decline of Masonry during the destruction of Jerusalem, a legend recorded in older lectures relates that a deputation asked Saint John the Evangelist—then Bishop of Ephesus—to assume the office of Grand Master; his acceptance re-established the Craft alongside the legacy of Saint John the Baptist.
