Its principles and symbolism draw upon the biblical relationship between David and Jonathan as recorded in the First Book of Samuel. Earlier traces of the tradition exist in Holland, where statutes for an Order of Jonathan and David were recorded in the 1770s, before the degree spread in America as an informal communication imparted to Master Masons with simple ceremony.

What is the purpose of allied degrees in Freemasonry?
Governing bodies for the Allied Masonic Degrees were established primarily to preserve, propagate, and organize detached rituals and side degrees that lacked their own independent governing councils. Their purpose was twofold: to actively work and maintain rituals whose beauty or historical interest warranted preservation, while setting aside detached degrees deemed to be lacking in substance.
